How to convert PNG to JPG

1. Click Choose a PNG image and select the file. Only PNG is accepted.
2. Pick a Background colour. Transparent areas will become this colour, so match it to where the image will appear.
3. Set JPEG quality. The default 90% suits most uses; lower it if you need to meet a file-size limit.
4. Check the size shown under the preview (dimensions and KB).
5. Click Download JPG. The file keeps its name with a .jpg extension.

What happens to transparency

The conversion runs in three steps on an HTML canvas the same size as your PNG:

Fully transparent pixels become the background colour. Semi-transparent pixels, such as anti-aliased logo edges and soft shadows, are blended with it. That is why the background choice matters: a logo prepared on white and placed on a navy banner will show a pale halo around its edges.

Worked example: meeting an upload limit

A Lucknow coaching institute has to upload a scanned fee certificate to a scholarship portal that accepts "JPG only, maximum 200 KB". The scan is a 1,654 × 2,339 PNG (A4 at 200 dpi) of 2.1 MB. The steps below are an illustration of the process, as exact sizes depend on the scan:

1. Convert at the default 90% with a white background, then check the size readout. If it is, say, 340 KB, it is over the limit.
2. Lower the quality to about 75% and check again. Text-heavy scans usually shrink a lot between 90 and 75.
3. If it is still too large, resize to 1,240 × 1,754 (A4 at 150 dpi) with the image resizer, choosing JPEG, and export again.
4. Zoom in to confirm the amounts and the stamp are still legible before uploading.

When to keep PNG and when to use JPG

For website images, try the WebP converter as well. Google's WebP documentation reports lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

• White halo on dark designs. Set the background colour to the exact hex code of the destination background, for example your brand navy, before converting.
• Converting text-heavy screenshots. Blurry edges around letters are JPEG artefacts. Keep PNG, or use quality 90 or higher.
• Re-saving JPGs repeatedly. Each JPEG save loses a little more detail. Always convert again from the original PNG.
• Expecting a smaller file every time. A simple flat graphic can be smaller as PNG. Compare the KB readout with the original.
• Losing the transparent master. Keep the PNG. You cannot recover transparency from the JPG later.

Practical use cases

• Government, exam or KYC portals that accept only JPG/JPEG under a fixed size.
• Marketplace sellers whose product shots on transparent PNG need a pure white background.
• Real-estate brokers sending floor plans or site photos by email or WhatsApp, where a 6 MB PNG is impractical.
• Clinics and agencies preparing images for ad platforms or print vendors that request JPG.
