Short answer: Reliable lead tracking has three layers. Capture: tag links with UTMs, store click IDs and fire one confirmed lead event in GA4 for forms, calls and WhatsApp. Feed back: send qualified and won CRM stages to Google Ads (offline conversions or enhanced conversions for leads) and to Meta (Conversions API). Report: attribute won revenue to original and latest source in the CRM. Start with the audit checklist, then fix gaps in that order.

FAQ

Common questions

What is offline conversion tracking?

It records outcomes that happen away from your website, such as a qualified call, site visit or signed contract, and sends them back to the ad platform that produced the lead. In Google Ads you store the click ID or the lead's email and phone, then import the outcome from your CRM.

What is the difference between first touch and last touch attribution?

First touch gives all the credit to the first recorded marketing interaction; last touch gives it to the final interaction before the conversion. First touch shows which channels create demand, last touch which ones close it. Both ignore the touches in between, so report them side by side.

What is CRM revenue attribution?

It connects each won deal to the marketing source that produced it. You need UTMs and click IDs captured on the website, contact source fields that are never overwritten, and a source snapshot copied onto each deal that revenue reports can group by.

Which attribution model is best for lead generation?

No single model. Use first touch for prospecting budgets, last non-direct click to judge which campaigns create enquiries, and data-driven on a qualified or won conversion for Google Ads bidding. Since November 2023 GA4 offers only data-driven and last-click models, so first touch comes from user dimensions or a CRM field.
